New Mega Pokemon Are Back to the Pokemon TCG

The 2025 Pokemon World Championships closed with one of the biggest surprises the Pokémon Trading Card Game has seen in years: the return of Mega Pokemon. Both the physical card game and the mobile app Pokémon TCG Pocket are getting new Mega-themed cards, complete with bold designs, unique mechanics, and release dates already on the horizon.

Mega Evolution Arrives in Pokemon TCG Pocket

This fall, Pokemon TCG Pocket will debut its first Mega Evolution cards. The reveal included three fan-favorite Pokémon:

  • Mega Altaria ex – 190 HP with Mega Harmony, an attack that gets stronger the more Pokémon you have on your Bench.

  • Mega Gyarados ex – 210 HP with Mega Blaster, dealing 140 damage while milling the top three cards from your opponent’s deck.

  • Mega Blaziken ex – 210 HP with Mega Burning, a powerful fire attack that burns the opponent’s Active Pokémon.

These cards come with a special Mega Evolution ex rule: if one of them is knocked out, your opponent takes three Prize cards. That makes them high-risk, high-reward choices for competitive play.

Pokemon Mega Attack Rare Cards in the Physical TCG

On the tabletop side, the TCG is introducing a brand-new rarity: Mega Attack Rare (MA). These cards feature oversized attack names across the artwork, calling back to the original Mega EX designs that debuted a decade ago.

Confirmed Mega Pokémon so far include:

  • Mega Charizard ex

  • Mega Gardevoir ex

  • Mega Lucario ex

  • Mega Dragonite ex (teased as a tie-in to Pokémon Legends: Z-A)

  • Oricorio ex (support card debuting alongside the Megas)

Release Timeline

  • Japan: Mega Charizard ex and others debut in Inferno X on September 26, 2025.

  • English release: These cards will arrive in Phantasmal Flames in November 2025, alongside Mega Gengar ex.

  • More Megas like Dragonite ex are set to follow in future expansions, starting in November in Japan.
